Commonly Accepted English Language Tests in the UK

Accepted English tests for MSc in the UK are as follows:

• IELTS: In the IELTS examination, you will get a score of 0 to 9 for every category, which includes listening, reading, speaking and writing, along with an overall band score. The UK universities generally ask for a minimum score of 6.0 or 6.5, with the more reputed institutions requiring 7.0 or 7.5.

• In the TOEFL examination, the four listening, reading, writing and speaking sections score between 0 and 30 points. You can score 120 points maximum. The minimum English language requirement for a master's (MSc) in the UK in most universities accepting TOEFL scores is between 70 and 80, while the more well-known universities may ask for a score of more than 100.

• For the PTE Academic examination, you can score between 10 and 90 points in all four sections. PTE minimal English score for masters in the UK accepted by most universities is 59.

• The Duolingo English test is also gaining popularity and is already accepted as one of the English exams required for MS in the UK. You need to score between 10 and 160 points in all four sections, where scores between 95 and 100 are equivalent to a 6.0 score in the IELTS examination.

Exemptions

If you have recently completed a degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree in the UK or higher in any one of the countries exempted from the English language requirements for MS in the UK or if you are even a national of any of these countries, you will generally meet the English requirements. Degrees obtained through distance learning or studying outside the exempted nations are not accepted for English language proficiency purposes.

Also, you must have completed the degree within two years of starting your master's in the UK.
